I love seeing the world through my boys' eyes, particularly when they are engaged in conversation and telling it like they see it. Tonight at dinner, we were discussing a mom of a boy in Griffin's class. This mom is a casual friend of mine, and we know the family fairly well. This particular mom does not have a cell phone.
Gasp. No cell phone. No one could believe it, the boys or Chris. I mentioned that I don't think I could live a cell phone less life, particularly on the days I work because I like knowing the boys can get ahold of me if they need me.
"But what does Mrs. (insert name) do on the days she works with no cell phone?" Aidan asks.
"Well, she doesn't have a job, so it's probably not as much an issue for her," I replied.
All three boys gasp (yet again.) No cell phone AND no job. They were incredulous. I, of course, was incredulous that they were so shocked as we live in a suburb ripe with moms that stay at home. My boys may not be the most observant kiddies in the bunch.
"But what does she do then?" Brennan asks.
Griffin interjects with authority, as Griffin always does, "She babysits all her kids all day. Isn't that right Momma? She has a whole lot of kids to babysit."
This mom does, indeed, have six kids under the age of 7. So, yes she has a whole lot of kiddies to keep track of.
Griffin wasn't done with the discussion, however, "So, momma, how many jobs do you have?"
"I only have one job. I am a lawyer."
"You don't do work at home?"
"Well, I do some work at home, on the days I don't have to go into my office."
"One of the moms in my class is a homework mom." Griffin says, seriously.
"A homeroom mom?" I ask, confused.
"No, a homeworking mom." He retorts.
"Oh, she works at home, instead of an office."
"Yes, that's what I said."
Exactly.
