Summer Competition
Like summers of past, the boys jumped headfirst into summer sports season. It was all swim and all tennis kind of summer, or for at least the first two thirds of the summer. Each day began nice and early with practice and then continued in a cycle of swim/tennis/swim/tennis until my car felt like it was on auto-pilot going in a circle from our house to the courts to the pool and back again.
The boys do love it though. And their love for it makes me love it. I love watching them enjoy being on a team, learn new things and soak up all the good of summer sports season.
All three boys competed on tennis team with Griffin enjoying a rookie season. I was amazed to see Griffin quickly learn match play - serving and actually playing out points. It made me grin ear to ear, even more so when Griffin played his first official doubles match with Brennan as his partner.
Aidan and Brennan also did incredibly well this tennis season. I couldn't believe the improvement in both of their games. Aidan excelled at both singles and doubles, ending up with third place in boys doubles and fifth place in singles at championships. Aidan was also honored with a coaches award at the end of the season. After watching his doubles match at championships (which he and his partner won on Aidan serving an ace), I told him how impressed I was with how much he had improved. He smiled and said, "You know why I improved one hundred percent Mom? Because I always give one hundred and ten percent."
I love that kid.
Brennan developed an aggressive game, with a scary forehand that seemed better suited for a grown man than a nine year old boy. I love watching him play. He plays with an abandon that you don't often see in a player of his age. No fear. His most exciting moment was making it to the finals for ten and under doubles at tennis championships. He had quite a crowd watching his match and he loved every second of the attention. He truly fell in love with tennis this summer and told me he thinks this may be his sport.
The boys were thrilled when the OPCC tennis team once again won the season for the third year in a row. Swimming? Well, let's just say its for the love of it.
